Well rounded women.
I have been following and reading blogs written by women since MySpace was “the place to be”. Those two decades of observation have shown me that most women curate a specific image in their online activities and leave out the parts of their lives that don’t quite fit into it. I’ve been guilty of it too.
But do you know what that does, to me… to all of us? It creates a really shallow, one-dimensional vision of what a woman is and what she does. Without meaning to those of us who have an online presence have played right into the hands of some master scheme. To what end you ask? To make sure we play small. Stay in character. Don’t let the cracks show. Don’t be too much. Be enough.
Blah, blah, blah.
There is something about approaching fifty that makes me just want to say, no yell…. FORGET THAT.
I am too much sometimes. I have an intense personality. I have a thousand interests and ten-thousand hobbies (at least in my mind). I do things that “aren’t done”, and I don’t do things that “should be” done.
And I don’t want you to think for one second that I am unique in this. I’m not. ALL women were created to be multi-faceted creatures in order to meet the needs of their community, their spouse, OURSELVES. And hello – children?! Because, spoiler alert: they each come with their own individual personality a mother has to learn and adapt to.
It’s a tall order we are called to, and playing small just won’t do. This blog will no longer just be about writing and publishing… it’s my space and I’m making it a reflection of who I really am.
I am learning to be happily well-rounded, are you?
